Extra costs: a wine cellar and more
Equipping a new property perfectly also means thinking about
the small details, such as the wine cellar, if the property has one. And while
this cost is far from that of furniture or works of art, it still contributes
to the total cost, said Nick Martin, the founder of WineOwners.com , a
London-based company that developed an online platform for value, follow up and
buy high-level wines .
Like making an art collection, Martin said there is no
standard price that must be spent to have his wine cellar and buyers should
consider whether it will be used for their own entertainment, or at least in
part, as a means of preservation of wealth.
If a buyer is starting a wine collection to use it for
entertainment, he recommends starting with a minimum of 200 bottles, which
includes white wine, red wine, sparkling wine and a small amount of dessert
wines. While some people can spend 750 pounds sterling (US $ 1,011) per box, or
62 pounds (US $ 84) per bottle, others do not believe they will spend less than
100 or 200 pounds (US $ 135 or US $ 270) per bottle.
Martin said he is currently working with a buyer who
recently restored a chateau with a 60-foot-long (18-meter) wine cellar where he
wants to store between 800 and 1,000 bottles for entertainment. You are likely
to spend around £ 130 (US $ 175) per bottle, for a total of about £ 120,000 (US
$ 162,000).
But while this sounds very loud, there are a lot of bottles
of more than 1,000 pounds sterling (more than US $ 1,348 more) out there, and
collections between 10 and 50 million pounds sterling (US $ 13.5 million to US
$ 67, 5 million), said Martin
And equipping a large mansion does not necessarily stop here.
There are a lot of properties nowadays with huge demonstration garages, built
with the car collector in mind, said Boomsma. And while these are good options
for that small subset of buyers, before anyone decides to make the purchase, he
advised them to ask themselves: Do I really want to show my cars? If the answer
is no, it may be better to buy something else instead of paying for the lost
space.
The same applies to other characteristics, said Boomsma.
For example, she said, "If you are passionate about
art, buying a contemporary house is wonderful because you now have this
incredible canvas to show your collection."
If you are passionate about wine, buying a house with a
large cellar means that you can send boxes back during trips abroad and enjoy
the process of storing that space.
But if, on the other hand, "a buyer is not passionate
about these characteristics at home," said Boomsma, "keeping them
becomes more of a job than a dream."
